Bilateral diplomatic relations with Switzerland started with the opening of a consulate in Geneva in 1898 and continued with the accreditation of the Ottoman Empire's Ambassador in Brussels to Switzerland in 1900. As of 1915, the Ottoman Empire has appointed an Ambassador to Switzerland with residence in Bern.
Relations continued during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, and the Embassy in Bern, was administered at the level of Chargé d’Affaires after the proclamation of the Republic.
In 1925, Mehmet Münir Ertegün, as the first Envoy of the Republic of Türkiye to Switzerland, presented his letter of credentials. The same year, an “Agreement of Friendship” between the Republic of Türkiye and Switzerland was signed. Switzerland, on the other hand, opened its first diplomatic mission in Istanbul in 1928. The Swiss mission in Istanbul was moved to Ankara in 1934 and became an Embassy in 1957.
The Turkish community in Switzerland, accounting for around 202.000 members, constitutes a key element in the relations between Türkiye and Switzerland.
Bilateral relations with Switzerland are developing positively, in line with reciprocal high-level visits. Former President Pascal Couchepin visited Türkiye in 2008. In November 2010, former President Abdullah Gül paid an official visit to Switzerland. Following these visits, former President Micheline Calmy-Rey came to Türkiye on 26-27 December 2011 and delivered a speech at the Ambassadors Conference.
Federal Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis paid an official visit to Türkiye on 12 July 2019. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu visited Switzerland on 14 August 2020.
Guy Parmelin, Vice President of the Swiss Confederation at the time and Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, visited Ankara on 30-31 October 2025 and attended the 19thTürkiye-Switzerland Economic Forum.
Our Minister met with Foreign Minister Cassis in 2024, 2025 and 2006 during the 3rd, 4th and 5thedition of the Antalya Diplomacy Forums.
There have been numerous meetings between high level authorities of the two countries in the recent period, especially at the margins of international meetings and conferences.
